TIGNES - LE LAC (2100 m)

It is the second highest ski resort in France (after Val Thorens),

it offers a magnificent and immense ski area, linked with the ski area of Val d'Isere, forming together one of the greatest ski domains in France.
Tignes has a special reputation for several sorts of ski competitions, including acrobatic ski, jumps, moguls, etc... and is a paradise for ski surfers and freeriders.
It is also a training place for the team of the 6 times in a row national football champion : Lyon

In short, a place where champions meet .... ... so, what are you waiting for ? Come on !

See pictures of Tignes and of the apartment on :
http://apartment-in-tignes.blogspot.com/ ( see below)
(Erratum on some pictures : the altitude of the very top of La Grande Motte is 3,653 m, not 3,456 m, the latter figure being the altitude of the top of the highest ski track, on the same mountain)

See other pictures of Tignes on : http://www.pbase.com/gillesfrance/french__alps
One can reach Tignes by train to Bourg St Maurice, then by bus or taxi.

Trains to Bourg St Maurice : see http://www.voyages-sncf.com/leisure/fr/launch/home/
Buses from Bourg St Maurice : see http://www.altibus.com/

Bus shuttles in Tignes-Le Lac and earby Val Claret, and inbetween, are free.
But private cars HAVE TO be parked in covered city parking aeas, which are not free of charge.
However this leaves the place visibly clean of cars, which is nice.
At la Grande Motte, a sort of fast underground mountain metro takes you up to an altitude of slightly over 3,000 meters in just a few moments, before you either stop there for a bite at the Panoramic restaurant ( 3,032 m ), or keep going and spend a few more minutes in a telepherique cabin to reach the highest point where skiers are allowed ( 3,456 m )
From up there, broad and far view over the Alps when the sky is clean.

SKIING : costs, equipment, clothes and other protections

a) The prices of ski passes for adults are subject to change
please check updated prices on Tignes's official website http://www.tignes.net ,
as figures shown below may not have been updated recently) :

Remember you are in a magical place : therefore you will find higher prices for the larger Espace Killy ( = Tignes + Val d'Isere) , and lower prices for  Tignes only .

Don't forget to consider taking the insurance coverage available.
Also some rebates are available in certain conditions, read the local price list carefully.

b) Ski equipment
The cost of renting equipment (shoes + skis or surfboard) varies from shop to shop, usually shops located near the flat and the Post Office give some discount if you mention you're staying at nearby Club-Hotel Maeva.

c) Clothes and basic rules
Please never forget you are basically in a sometimes very nice looking, but also possibly hostile environment, you are rather high in the mountains, the weather and the temperature can sometimes change quickly, even by sunny weather, way up high or in the shadow, it may be or get pretty cold, you fingers or your ears could sometimes suffer a bit, or much, if they are not protected properly.
You need good warm clothes and socks, possibly tights under your trousers, good ski gloves possibly with also silk gloves underneath (don't loose your gloves on the ski-lifts !), a couple of thick wool bonnets (for your head ! 2 in case you lose one) and very good sunglasses. Skin protection cream for your face and lips is also a must.
This is all obvious to experienced skiers, it's all common good sense, but please NEVER forget those details.

There are a few restaurants on top of some major ski-lifts, where you can eat and drink, but taking some food/drinks in a small belt-bag (the French call it a banana) may be useful
Of course DO NOT go out official tracks without an experienced local guide ,
there is far enough space to have lots of fun without being in big danger.

AFTER SKIING

Have a good time !
You may relax at home, but also quickly have enough energy to also want to go out at night,  there is some choice :
- restaurants serving for example fondue savoyarde - sort of hot melted Swiss-like cheese with white wine and pieces of French bread - and other local specialties,
- an ice skating place,
- a bowling game,
- sometimes an evening show of ski jumps just across the street,
- a movie theater,
- discotheques,
- cafes serving hot wine with cinnamon and rich huckleberry pies ... or just beer
sometimes with live music : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MaUR0V-BySU
.... enough to want to stay longer !
